SoftBank's $6.5B Bet on AI: Acquiring Ampere to Power the Future

Published on March 19

SoftBank Group Corp. plans to acquire Ampere Computing, a Silicon Valley-based semiconductor design company, for $6.5 billion in cash. Ampere specializes in high-performance, energy-efficient processors for cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) workloads.

This acquisition aligns with SoftBank's strategy to enhance its AI infrastructure. Ampere will become a wholly owned subsidiary, retaining its name and Santa Clara, California headquarters. Major investors Oracle Corp. and Carlyle Group will sell their stakes as part of this transaction. SoftBank's chairman and CEO, Masayoshi Son, stated that "the future of Artificial Super Intelligence requires breakthrough computing power," and that Ampere's expertise will accelerate this vision, deepening SoftBank's commitment to AI innovation in the United States.

This move is part of SoftBank's broader strategy to expand its AI portfolio, following previous investments such as the acquisition of UK based chip designer Arm Holdings in 2016 and a recent partnership with Oracle and OpenAI on the $500 billion Stargate initiative to build AI data centers in the U.S.

The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals, and is expected to be finalized in the second half of 2025.

For professionals in the semiconductor industry, this acquisition may signal increased investment and job opportunities in AI focused chip design and development, particularly in the United States. As SoftBank integrates Ampere's technology into its broader AI initiatives, there could be a heightened demand for skilled engineers and developers specializing in AI and cloud computing processors.

Additionally, Ampere's focus on energy efficient processors aligns with the industry's growing emphasis on sustainable computing solutions, potentially leading to new roles centered around green technology innovations.
